Boys Soccer Wins FAA Tournament Championship

The St. Luke’s boys varsity soccer team was crowned Fairchester Athletic Association Champions on Saturday, Nov. 11, after beating Greenwich Country Day School 2-1.

It is the first tournament title the Storm has won since 2009, and St. Luke’s sealed victory following a penalty shootout. The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after extra time, but some goalkeeping heroics from Aidan Flannigan ’24, who saved two of the Tigers' spot kicks, helped St. Luke’s claim the win.

Javier Minuesa ’25 had given St. Luke’s the perfect start, rising at the back post to head home a Watson Meyer ’24 corner kick after just three and a half minutes. The Storm continued to probe but couldn’t add to its tally.

GCDS then found a little rhythm to its play and, if not for an outstanding save from Flannigan in the 29th minute, would have made it 1-1.

The Tigers would eventually tie the game up in the 59th minute, and despite both teams having chances to win the game in regulation, the contest headed to overtime.

St. Luke’s again created opportunities but couldn’t find the back of the net in extra time. The Storm made no mistake in the shootout and sealed a historic victory, scoring three of its four spot kicks. 

Flannigan had done his homework, and twice dove the right way to produce the game-winning saves.

Head Coach Ryan Fairhurst had nothing but praise for his players after the game: “It was a great game between two strong teams. Penalty shootouts are a tough way to decide a game, but it wasn’t lucky. We prepared for it, and you could see it with our penalty takers and Aidan. I’m so happy for this group. The time, effort, and dedication they have put into this program have been exceptional, and they have set the standard for their successors for years to come.”
